What is the best restaurant in Peebo?
Sometimes a place is just too good to ignore and sometimes, just sometimes, an idea is too good to ignore.
That's how the I Love Peebo campaign was born.
Sadly, the city of Peterborough is too often overlooked on a national scale, much to the irritation of Andy Burrows and his BBC Radio Cambridgeshire breakfast show team.
They have long championed this fair city, but something had to be done when at the end of 2006 Andy received a diary for the year ahead which contained a map of the UK in the information section.
Although it listed many places, Peterborough was not one of them.
Andy, the 95.7FM breakfast show team - Harry Beer, Emma Baugh, Suzie Roberts and Titters - and the listeners to the programme then began compiling a list of other times when Peterborough deserves - but fails to get - a mention.
They include:
The
A14 eastbound from the M1 and M6 interchange. No signs to suggest Peterborough is approaching until Junction 13 which is the Peterborough turn
off
The BBC weather maps of the UK
The book, 1001 Places To See Before You Die
The recent GNER rail campaign which listed places along
the East Coast Mainline of places worth visiting
The mileage charts at the back of road atlases
In response to this, one listener suggested Peterborough was just too long a word to feature in diaries and on weather maps, while another - the now infamous Norman of Werrington - suggested the city be renamed Peebo.
The idea was the work of genius and the I Love Peebo campaign was born.
Another listener, Jon Cousins, informed a friend in New York who promptly wrote Peebo - Put It On The Map and followed it up with a remix version.
At that point, Matt Hagger, Director of Peterborough's leading web and marketing agency E-Man, partnered with us by sponsoring the design and development this website and I Love Peebo car stickers are on their way.
The I Love Peebo campaign aims to:
Increase awareness of Peterborough, it's location and what it offers to
visitors.
Put Peterborough, literally, on the map - especially when it companies who produce little maps for diaries and officials responsible
for road signs.
And generally act as force for good for Peterborough and it's residents.
It already has the backing of city leaders and thousands of listeners so come join the parade. Pledge your allegiance to the I Love Peebo campaign and help put Peterborough on the map.
